I served my 2.5 years National Service in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) from December 1982 to June 1985. I was in the U.S. for 10 years and returned to Singapore in March 1995. I came back, requested a reserve unit immediately, and was designated Forward Observation Officer of Foxtrot Company, 400A Tank Regiment. I served in this capacity for 11 years and was decommissioned with the rest of my regiment in March 2006.

I went to the U.S. to get a Computer Science degree at Cal in the Fall of 1985 and got involved in the Engineering Co-op program. My advisor on my work in Manufacturing-related Databases was Prof. Larry Rowe . That's how I started in Sun on Jan. 6th, 1988 as employee # 4215, a CIM Software Engineer in the CIM department (re-orged more than 20 times to SMCC IR GSM) by 1994 (and probably another 20 times since). I worked in the Shop Floor System (SFS), CIM Technology, Keep the Business Running (KBR), Automated Test System (ATS) and NextGen Manufacturing Systems groups. I relocated back to Singapore and was a Regional Systems Consultant with the Asia Escalation Centre from June 1995 to March 1997. For 1 year until April 1998, I was the Tools/Technology Architect in used to be called Technology, Architecture & Operations Technology, Architecture & IR Infrastructure group. . My primary responsibility was our Software Development Environment , especially tools for building Java-enabled, enterprise applications. A secondary activity was providing SunService IR APLA and other SunService groups with architectural and technology consulting. And of course, I worked on any projects related to Technology, Architecture or Infrastructure that my boss deemed necessary. TAO was reorganized to Global Program Office (GPO) and again to Architecture and Technology Office (ATO) under different VPs, directors and managers. Around 2002, as a result of regular reorganization and RIFs (reductions in force) many IT Architects were pooled into a single organization known as STAR (Strategy & Architecture). I was a Technical Architect (as opposed to a Business Architect) in the Application & Security Architecture team within STAR. Most of the time, my boss reported directly to the CIO. Our department gradually morphed into SARG (Strategy, Architecture & Governance) when the IT Governance organization was merged. Just before I left in the August 2006 RIF, it was announced that we were merging with ITSM (service management) but I doubt they would've called it ORGASM (organization for Governance, Architecture, Strategy & Management) as I suggested. Here is a chronological list of all the managers I've reported to in Sun:

  1. Rod Miller (SFS)
  2. John Finlay (ATS)
  3. Linda Chan (SFS)
  4. Mike Moore (CIM Tech)
  5. Ron Sha (WWATS)
  6. Mike Moore* (ATSC)
  7. Dave Hand (Ops IR)
  8. Leslie McRoberts (NextGen Mfg Sys)
  9. Richard Teo (AEC)
  10. Ron Sha* (TAO)
  11. Dave Tracey (GPO)
  12. Abhay Gupta (ATO)
  13. Casey Costley (ATO)
  14. Prakash Dubey (ATO)
  15. Abhay Gupta* (ATO)
  16. Elaine Feeney (ATO)
  17. Karen Casella (STAR Apps & Web Svcs)
  18. Abhay Gupta* (STAR App & Security Arch)
  19. Hanumantha Neti (IT Strategy ARchitecture & Governance)

Anyway, the work at Sun was very interesting due to continual high learning curve in not just technology areas. I picked up a thing or two about finance, people, processes and methodologies in the last 5 years there. The battle-crys at Sun IT over the years ranged from "Keep the Business Running" (KBR) to "One Sun running Sun ONE supported by ONE IT" and "Let's outsource ourselves" (Project Jupiter).
A few days after receiving my bronze parachute, I made the decision not to rejoin the ranks of the Fortune 500 and incorporated Java Troopers Pte Ltd. This decision was more about fulfillment than finance. In the 2nd decade of my time at Sun, I had invented many mechanisms, of which only 10% saw the light of day. I am determined to try building at least another 20% of them in the course of serving my clients requirements. Most of my ideas are rather generic but I will now get to see if the ROIs make them worthy of systems or products. * - denotes repetitions

I married Julie Phua Kim Li on November 16th, 1996. She wanted me to say that she's a heart-stoppingly georgous babe, but I admire her intelligence and character most, which is why I named my wonderful Ultra 2 after her. We were blessed with our daughters, Hannah on April 26th, 2000 and Leah on February 3rd, 2003, and our son Noah on August 20th 2005. We are hoping to be blessed with 1 more after if him someday.

I have 2 godsons, Gregory Wee who lives in Davis with his parents, Chris and Poh Foong, and Benjamin Chee who lives in Singapore with his parents Gerard and Joy . And we have 2 goddaughters, Jamie Yeo belongs to Chris and Susan, and Marie Lim belongs to Mark and Monica. Julie is also godmother to 4 boys, Zachary, Jordan, Aaron and Elijah Khoo , in Singapore belonging to Tony and Angie.

Maybe we'll put our family tree on the web one day, but for now, here are a few pics of the Ng Clan .

I highly recommend NOT buying any French cars! All the Peugeots and Renaults we owned sucked big time. This is my 2nd Toyota. I bought a Corolla from Teo in the US and put 140,000 miles on it 7-1/2 years.
